In recognition of Suicide Prevention Week, Gabriel Bastien, PhD candidate in psychiatric sciences at Université de Montréal, gave a presentation on suicide and substance use on February 9, 2023.
Gabriel’s presentation explored the complex relationship between substance use, depression and suicide risk, offering critical perspectives and avenues for intervention.Three key themes were addressed:
- Mechanisms involved in the interrelationship of depression and substance use;
- Risk factors for suicide (e.g. alcohol use disorder, psychiatric comorbidities such as mood disorders, impact of substance use on impulsivity and behavioral inhibition);
- Sex and gender differences in the clinical presentation of substance users with suicidal behaviors.
